Himalayan Arts Gallery is a family-owned business who has been keeping up and promoting the arts and the culture of thangka paintings. The skill of painting thangkas has been transferred from generations which has evolved over time. However, the quality and authenticity of the arts/Thangkas has been retained, the most important aspect of Thangka paintings.
Bijay Lama Moktan (eldest son), is managing the gallery while the parents are artists taking care of the workshop with more than 20 artists. The gallery is located in 270 Ashok galli, Jyatha, Thamel, one of the most popular tourist hubs in Kathmandu. So, whenever you get an opportunity to visit Thamel, we would be happy to welcome you in and enjoy Nepali tea together :).
Buddhi Man Tamang, a well-known, dedicated and a great master (senior artist), has been painting thangka since 1975. He is popularly known as Kaji among friends and relatives. His amazing creations are found in this website. Beside painting thangka, he has provided thangka painting lessons to number of students, both national and international. He conducts free thangka classes to the one who really admires the art and is from financially deprived communities. For him, thangka paintings or art is not only an image we see on the canvas, but is a sacred art that carries glorious pride and histories, philosophies of Buddhism and connectedness of the Buddhist people and tradition.
Bijay(Bj), an artist and the owner of a gallery 'Himalayan Arts Gallery' located at Ashok galli, Thamel, Kathmandu. He has been in this business since 2000. He has done collaborative workshops with various national and international artists that took place in Kathmandu. His arts ( also family’s creation) is not limited within Nepal . He has been taking part in various international arts and handicraft exhibitions to promote locally created arts in global arena. For this, he has visited India, Bhutan, Indonesia, Thailand, China, UK, Italy, France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, USA and still exploring potential countries. He loves creating unique pieces blending modern and traditional Thanka painting styles. He along with his father and brother (by profession a tattoo artist) has created few unique pieces for international buyers.
Nar Bahadur Lama, a well-known, dedicated and a great master(senior artist), has started painting in 1991. He has not gotten any formal training in art so for him his father, brothers, uncles,and relatives(family with full of Thangka artists) have been the teacher and his dedication to it. He has provided Thangka painting lessons to number of students, both national and international. He showcased his talent in various countries like India, Bhutan, and China and has spent a good number of years in these countries. He continues painting Thangkas and more than 40 Thankga artists are working under his guidance. He is also being supported by his nephew (BJ; an artist and owner of Himalayan Arts Gallery Pvt. Ltd)to promote his arts in international markets.
Chandra (Syangten) Lama, is one of the versatile artists who has been painting Thangka since 1992 (from the age of 12). He has mastered himself in various forms of arts like Tibetan style of Thangka painting, Newari (Pauva) painting, wall painting, and fine arts. Besides engaging in painting Thangkas and other arts, he also gives lessons. He has taught both national and international students and has travelled to India, Bhutan, China, Malaysia, Ireland and United Kingdom to showcase his talent as well as to teach Thangka painting.
Bikram Lama, Director of Himalayan Arts Gallery Pvt. Ltd. is also a proficient artist. For art, he was inspired by this family from a very young age as he has got a family full of artists, father, mother, and brother. Some of their collaborative work can be found in custom design section. He has travelled to various countries in Europe and Asia; France, Italy, Switzerland, India, and Thailand to promote Nepalese handicrafts including Thangka Paintings. The inquisitiveness to bring uniqueness to the art has led him towards tattoo. He has mastered in this form of art as well.
